    Carbon dioxide emissions are measured by weight in grams (g) and calculated based on how much CO2 is emitted per distance traveled, measured in kilometers (km). CO2 emissions are generally indicated as g/km. This value remains unchanged throughout the vehicle’s lifetime and is listed in the registration document (V5). For every new model released to market, a binding CO2 emissions value is determined by the manufacturer during the type approval process before the vehicle’s initial registration.

    The Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax is dependent on the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. The BIK value is multiplied by the vehicle’s P11D price to calculate the annual taxable benefit. The driver’s income tax rate is then applied to this amount to determine the annual BIK charge. Vehicles with lower CO2 emissions are subject to more favorable tax rates.
